Leadership

The ASA team has extensive experience of:

  1. Reactive distillation, gas to liquids processes and process engineering; and

  2. Developing, operating and monetising natural gas reserves (gas to power, piped natural gas, compressed natural gas and liquid petroleum gas).

The combination of this experience enables ASA to fully understand its target market for licensing its technology and how the process can be integrated within upstream projects.  The team has excellent contacts in gas rich countries where flaring is common (e.g. Nigeria, Angola and the US).

The inventor of the technology, Rian Steyn, has excellent credentials.  He was responsible for the development and patenting of several petrochemical reactive distillation processes with a major energy company with gas to liquids operations.

The team has extensive project development experience and a strong track record in maximising shareholder returns through the careful and conservative analysis of projects, adherence to established processes and tight cash control.

Nigel Friend, Chief Financial and Commercial Officer

Nigel has been in the energy sector for 25 years and was instrumental in the successful development of two integrated gas companies in Turkey and Tanzania.

He has held several board positions for private and public companies. As Board Director and Chief Executive Officer of the TSXV listed, Orca Energy Group Inc., he led the financial and commercial activities for the Company, including liaison with the Tanzanian Government, Ministries, parastatals, the World Bank, regulators and other stakeholders.  He is currently a non-executive director of AIM listed, Helium One.

He has extensive corporate and project finance experience.  At KPMG, he led a corporate finance department that project managed several significant corporate transactions and specialised in due diligence. At Orca, he was responsible for the raising of all external finance, liaising with the investor community and the financial structuring of several infrastructure projects. At Enron, he was responsible for strategic investments in energy related companies.

He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London.

Rian Steyn, Research and Development Officer

Rian Steyn is the inventor of ASA’s patented proprietary gas to liquids technology.

He has extensive research and development experience primarily gained at Sasol where he was involved in the evaluation of two new reactive distillation processes (licensed to Sasol by a third party) for their petrochemical complexes. He subsequently led the new venture team to assess where reactive distillation could be further utilized in Sasol’s chemical processes to reduce capital and operating costs and increase yields. Several of these new processes were patented.

Whilst at Foster Wheeler, Rian gained significant process engineering experience in the design of fixed bed reactors and distillation columns.

He is currently the Managing Director of Cross EPC (Pty) Limited that undertakes a range of process engineering projects for the oil and gas, mining and chemical industries. He has designed and constructed an interface module to remove impurities from municipal waste synthetic gas and to enhance the hydrogen content.

Derrick Tarrant, Chief Operating Officer

Derrick has over 35 years of upstream operational, technical, asset and development management experience covering Sub-Saharan Africa, MENA and UK/Norwegian sectors of the North Sea.

He is a dynamic professional chartered engineer who has led an array of mid to high value developments of company and JV assets, both onshore and offshore, utilising business development and asset management systems from concept selection through to EPC contracting and execution. As a tried and tested offshore installation manager he has extensive knowledge of drilling, well testing, commissioning, start-up and operations. He has noteworthy experience of FPSO construction and commissioning having been assigned to the development teams of one UK and two Norwegian sector FPSO builds.

He has been Asset & Development Manager for Petrofac IES assets in Nigeria and Tunisia and Sasol Petroleum International in Mozambique.  At Sasol, he was part of the engineering, field development and start-up teams for the supply of natural gas to the gas to liquids facilities in South Africa.

Most recently, he has managed and led the facility upgrades at Orca Energy Inc’s gas processing facilities in Tanzania as field pressure declines. This has included the installation of compression facilities.

His other technical and operations positions held were at Qatar Petroleum, Hamilton Brothers, Kerr McGee, Cairn India, Brovig Reservoir Development Services, Halliburton, Schlumberger, ADIL and Kellog Brown & Root.
